Maine ADULT-USE It’s officially OFFICIAL!

Maine ADULT-USE It’s officially OFFICIAL!

That’s right, you heard correctly, after a somewhat extended wait, the Office of Marijuana Policy has released the details for the official launch of the Adult-Use Marijuana in Maine Program. The Office of Marijuana Policy, or OMP, announced today, August 14, 2020, plans to begin issuing active licenses for Maine Adult-Use marijuana businesses, and when retail sales are legally allowed to start. The time is here, folks, and we can all agree it’s long overdue!

OMP has announced that beginning on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, they will begin issuing the first active licenses for recreational cannabis businesses. Active licenses will continue to be issued on a routine schedule from the Office of Marijuana Policy. These licenses are slated to be issued to a variety of cannabis businesses, including testing labs, cultivation, manufacturing, and of course, retail sales. More information surrounding licensing is expected to be released on the same date of September 8, 2020.

The second exciting piece of information released today was the date for the official launch of retail sales for Adult-Use patients. The Office of Marijuana Policy has stated that beginning on Friday, October 9, 2020, cannabis businesses who have been granted the active licenses will be permitted to begin conducting retail sales. These Adult-Use marijuana sales are only for consumers 21 years of age or older.

OMP had postponed any official launch of the Adult-Use program back in April. As stated by OMP Director Erik Gunderson in the Office of Marijuana Policy’s press release earlier today —     “While we were poised to launch this new industry earlier this year, we were unwilling to sacrifice the high standards we have set for this program by launching during an emerging public health pandemic and in the absence of a testing facility. With the support of the public health community, municipalities across the state, and the industry we regulate, we have used the last few months to ensure this new industry is introduced to Maine consumers in a manner that is as responsible as possible.”

It is safe to say that the entire Maine marijuana industry is excited and overdue for this great news. Businesses and consumers alike have practiced immense patience waiting for this day, and it is wonderful to witness it coming to fruition. Like the Maine medical marijuana program, the Maine recreational use, or Adult-Use program, is expected to be a massive boost for our economy, our communities, and our overall wellness. We all will be watching as September 8, 2020, and October 9, 2020, arrive, and Maine once again makes history!
